3 Things Queen Creek Parents Get Wrong About Using ESA for Martial Arts

Mar 28, 2025

Arizona ESA funds can absolutely pay for BJJ — but most parents make the process harder than it needs to be. Here are the three most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Assuming You Need Pre-Approval for Each Activity

You don't. Once your ESA funds are active and loaded into ClassWallet, you can allocate them to any registered vendor in the Physical Education or Extracurricular category. Gracie Barra Queen Creek is a fully registered ClassWallet vendor. There's no separate approval step for choosing us — just search, select, and pay.

Mistake #2: Waiting Until the School Year Starts

ESA funds don't follow a school calendar. You can enroll your child at any time during the year. Many families wait until August or September thinking there's a 'start date' — meanwhile, their child misses months of training and their funds sit unused. We enroll ESA families year-round.

Mistake #3: Not Trying Before Committing Funds

Some parents process the ClassWallet payment before their child has ever stepped on a mat. We always recommend a free trial class first. Let your child experience the program, meet the coaches, and see if it's the right fit. Then commit the ESA funds knowing you've made an informed choice. There's no pressure from our side — the free class exists specifically for this.

Bonus: What Qualifies and What Doesn't

All of our kids programs qualify for ESA funding: Little Champions I (5–6), LC II (7–9), and Juniors & Teens (10–15). Gi purchases may also be eligible depending on your ClassWallet category allocation. Adult programs do not qualify — ESA is for enrolled students under 18.
