What's not great is that the boom has attracted operators who see a business opportunity but lack the credentials, curriculum, or culture to actually develop students. Some of these gyms look professional online. The problems only show up after you've signed a contract.

Red Flag #1: No Verifiable Black Belt on the Mat

This is the single biggest red flag. Some gyms advertise a black belt 'affiliation' — meaning a black belt from another city occasionally visits. But your Tuesday evening class is taught by a blue belt with two years of experience. Ask specifically: who is teaching my class tonight, and what is their rank?

If your 5-year-old and a 14-year-old are in the same 'kids class,' the gym either doesn't have enough students to separate or doesn't believe it matters. It matters.
