What to Actually Look for When Choosing a BJJ Academy in the East Valley

Mar 15, 2025

Forget the flashy websites. Here are the five things that separate a great BJJ academy from an average one — and how to evaluate them during a single free trial visit.

The Website Won't Tell You

Every BJJ gym in the East Valley has a professional website now. They all say 'world-class instruction' and 'family-friendly environment.' The words are the same because they're easy to write. The difference is what happens when you walk through the door. Here's what to actually look for.

Who's Teaching — Not Who's Affiliated

The biggest marketing trick in BJJ is affiliation. A gym can affiliate with a major organization and still have classes taught by blue belts. Ask specifically: how many black belts actively teach classes on a weekly basis? Not 'on staff.' Not 'available for seminars.' On the mat, coaching, this week. At Gracie Barra Queen Creek, the answer is five.

Watch the Kids Classes

You learn more about a gym watching a kids class than an adult class. Is there age separation? Does the coach know students by name? Are the kids engaged or zoned out? Is there a curriculum or is the coach improvising? A gym that runs excellent kids programming almost always runs excellent adult programming. The reverse is not true.

The 48-Hour Test

After your free trial, pay attention to what happens in the next 48 hours. Does the gym follow up? Does the coach remember your name? Or do you get a generic email blast and a hard-sell phone call? The follow-up tells you whether the gym treats you as a person or a conversion metric.

The Culture Question

Ask a few students after class: 'What do you like about training here?' If they talk about the coach, the community, and how they've improved — that's a real culture. If they shrug and say 'it's close to my house' — keep looking.
